Hi Friends,

Sharing My Experience: Explaining ML to My Niece

One day, my niece came up to me and asked, “Ary, Mama, what is AI?” I was thrilled that she was curious about such an exciting topic! So, I took a moment to explain it to her in a way that made sense to a young mind.

Once upon a time, there was a curious child who loved exploring new things. One day, the child came across a fascinating candle. Excitedly, the child reached out to touch the flame but quickly pulled back, realizing it was hot and hurt.

The child learned a valuable lesson: “Red and bright means pain.” This is just like when we touch something hot and get burned, we learn to be careful around similar things.

A few days later, the child encountered a stove for the first time. Remembering the lesson from the candle, the child knew that a red and bright stove might also be hot and dangerous. So, the child decided to stay away from it, keeping safe from potential harm.

In a way, the child used machine learning, just like computers do. Instead of being explicitly told that the stove is hot, the child learned from the patterns observed with the candle. Machine learning is all about finding patterns and making smart decisions based on what we’ve learned, without someone having to explicitly tell us what to do.

So, just like the curious child, machines can learn from their experiences and make decisions based on patterns they discover. Machine learning helps computers become smarter and solve problems by finding patterns in the data they observe. It’s like having a superpower to learn and make smart choices all on their own!
