Technology can have both positive and negative effects on our sleep. On the one hand, technology can be used to monitor and improve our sleep habits, such as by using sleep tracking apps or smart beds. On the other hand, technology can also disrupt our sleep patterns and cause sleep disorders such as insomnia or sleep apnea.

One of the main ways technology can disrupt our sleep is through the blue light emitted by electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Blue light can suppress the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Moreover, the constant stimulation and information overload that come with technology can also cause anxiety and stress, which can further disrupt our sleep.

To mitigate the negative effects of technology on sleep, there are a few solutions that can be implemented:

  1. Set a technology curfew: Establish a set time in the evening when you stop using electronic devices and focus on winding down for sleep.
  2. Use blue light filters: Install a blue light filter on your devices or use night mode to reduce the amount of blue light emitted. Some devices also have a “bedtime mode” that automatically adjusts the screen’s brightness and colour temperature based on the time of day.
  3. Create a relaxing sleep environment: Make your bedroom a calm and soothing space that is conducive to sleep. This can include using blackout curtains, white noise machines, or aromatherapy diffusers.
  4. Establish a consistent sleep routine: go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This helps regulate your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle and improve the quality of your sleep.
  5. Use technology to improve sleep: There are various sleep tracking apps and wearable devices that can help monitor your sleep habits and provide suggestions for improvement, such as adjusting your bedtime routine or sleep environment.

Overall, technology can have a significant impact on our sleep habits, both positively and negatively. By being mindful of our technology use and implementing these solutions, we can minimise the negative effects and improve the quality of our sleep.
